Gaze and retinal-image-stability in two kinds of sequential looking tasks
نویسنده
چکیده
UNLABELLED Eye and head movements used to keep the gaze on target were examined as unrestrained seated subjects performed two tasks: (1) tapping sequences of 3-D targets; and (2) only looking at sequences of 3-D targets. Large differences were observed in the head/eye coordination patterns used in each task. During tapping, the head moved quickly and continuously. Retinal-image speeds were relatively high (up to 5 degrees/s). During looking-only, the head moved more slowly and almost came to rest between gaze-shifts. Retinal image velocities between gaze-shifts were 60-77% lower during looking-only than during tapping. CONCLUSION coordinated eye/head patterns are adjusted to satisfy the demands of a particular task. These adjustments affect low-level oculomotor mechanisms between as well as during the gaze shifts, themselves (reported previously).

Gaze-shift dynamics in two kinds of sequential looking tasks
Gaze-shift dynamics of unrestrained seated subjects were examined. The subjects participated in two tasks. In the first task, they tapped sequences of 3-D targets located on a table in front of them. In the second task, they only looked at similar sequences of targets. The purpose of the task (tapping vs only looking) affected the dynamics of gaze-shifts. Gaze and eye-in-head peak velocities we...
متن کاملThe effect of retinal image slip on peripheral visual acuity.
Retinal image slip promoted by fixational eye movements prevents image fading in central vision. However, in the periphery a higher amount of movement is necessary to prevent this fading. We assessed the effect of different levels of retinal image slip in peripheral vision by measuring peripheral visual acuity (VA), with and without crowding, while modulating retinal image slip by using gaze-li...
متن کاملGaze stability of observers watching Op Art pictures.
It has been the matter of some debate why we can experience vivid dynamic illusions when looking at static pictures composed from simple black and white patterns. The impression of illusory motion is particularly strong when viewing some of the works of 'Op Artists, such as Bridget Riley's painting Fall. Explanations of the illusory motion have ranged from retinal to cortical mechanisms, and an...
متن کاملA high speed gaze control system based on the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex
Stabilizing the visual system is a crucial issue for any sighted mobile creature, whether it will be natural or artificial. The more immune the gaze of an animal or a robot is to various kinds of disturbances (e.g., those created by body or head movements when walking or flying), the less troublesome it will be for the visual system to carry out its many information processing tasks. The gaze c...
